He plans to run for California Attorney General if Rob Bonta enters the governor's race. Cortese has two years left in his state Senate term; a victory would trigger a special election in Santa Clara County to fill the final year. Cortese previously served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and San Jose City Council. He is an attorney with strong labor ties, chaired the Senate Labor Committee, passed workers' rights legislation after the 2021 VTA shooting, helped sue to protect DACA, and led gun-violence prevention efforts.
