"Honestly, it felt like a movie scene - it was a little bit surreal and when we learned that nobody was injured, that's that first checkpoint - okay, now what are we doing?"
"Yes it's of concern, and so much so, we monitor the weather reports daily, we ensure we're in close communication with the construction team out there and that they have truly vetted safety plans should a large swell or storm event come through,"
"I was like man this is my craziest one yet, like, out of all my birthdays this is going to be one I remember,"
Strong waves on December 23 caused a section of the Santa Cruz Wharf to collapse, sending 150 feet of decking and restrooms into the ocean and three construction workers into the water. Two workers were rescued by a lifeguard unit on jet skis and a third swam to safety. An engineering assessment found the remaining wharf structurally sound. Reconstruction began about a month ago with cranes and equipment staged at the site. City crews monitor weather daily, coordinate with the construction team, and have vetted safety plans to address large swells or storm events near the work zone. A nearby restaurant worker described the event as surreal.
