Question about appealing to Trump voters set her off, says gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter
"I think Trump is hurting Californians. I am not going to sell out our values as a state for some short-term political gain to try and appease people who are still standing and still supporting what this president is doing as he is trampling on our Constitution."
"It was inappropriate. I could have done better in that situation and I know that. I really want my staff to understand that I value them."
Katie Porter acknowledged that she mishandled a recent television interview and a 2021 incident in which she cursed at a staffer. Porter said she was pushing back on a reporter's implication that she should be more temperate politically and defended her refusal to appease supporters of President Donald Trump. Porter apologized in real time to the staffer and said the outburst was inappropriate and that she could have done better. Several rivals criticized her behavior after videos went viral, with at least one calling for her to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.
