"This is our lemon tree that we had - it was here when we moved here, and it was one of our favorite things."
"Family living close by was one of the main reasons my parents decided to live here,"
"With these tree stories, I was like, 'Oh, I bet my neighbors have something similar where they have a tree that was either part of their children's childhood or their reason why they wanted to move here,"
Mona Patterson, 22, grew up in west Altadena and lost her family home in the Eaton Fire, yet a lemon tree from the property is sprouting again. The tree once provided fruit for family desserts and now shows new baby growth that Patterson hopes to preserve when rebuilding begins. Patterson spent seven months interviewing neighbors about trees that survived, died in the fire, or were removed during debris cleanup, drawing on her journalism and environmental science education from Chapman University. Separately, authorities arrested and charged 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht in connection with the deadly Palisades Fire that killed 12 people and destroyed over 6,800 structures.
