Tom Hofman enters his 41st season coaching basketball at La Cañada High, including 39 seasons as varsity coach, at age 73. La Cañada has won 31 Rio Hondo League titles under his tenure. The Rio Hondo League will merge with the Pacific League after this season. The team runs an offense modeled on Bobby Knight's Indiana system with minor tweaks, which prompts opponents to play zone because man-to-man yields many layups. Hofman emphasizes coaching neighborhood kids and insists he never recruited players. Peers praise his passing game and long-term commitment. He plans to continue coaching while his wife Cindy still enjoys the game.
