"I had two horses in the governor's race already,"
"They decided not to get involved in the end. ... The race is fundamentally different today, right?"
"definitely sooner rather than later."
California Attorney General Rob Bonta is reconsidering a run for governor after Kamala Harris and Alex Padilla decided not to enter the race, which he says fundamentally changed the contest. He has received significant encouragement to join the crowded field and his political advisers have been gauging support among powerful Democrats statewide. Bonta faces scrutiny over nearly $500,000 in campaign funds used to pay private lawyers, funds he says were necessary to cooperate with federal investigators who approached him about potential blackmail or extortion threats. He has not been accused of impropriety and expects to decide 'definitely sooner rather than later.'
