Plane lands safely in a California watermelon field after engine failure
"Pilot Anastasia Vournas noticed the plane's engine sputtering and losing power before it gave out, she told independent video news agency Key News Network. At that point, Vournas knew the flight wouldn't make it to its intended destination of Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, so she searched for a spot to make an emergency landing and brought the plane down in a watermelon field."
"When you're flying a plane you always have to think, if I lose an engine, where am I going to put this airplane down?' and that's what I did, she said. I said tighten up your belts. We're going to be landing here.' The emergency landing was smooth, other than some bumps once the aircraft hit the watermelons, Vournas said."
A single-engine Piper PA-28-140 traveling from Santa Paula to Whiteman Airport in Pacoima experienced engine failure and made an emergency landing in a Valencia watermelon field near the 5 Freeway and Six Flags Magic Mountain just before 5:10 p.m. The pilot, Anastasia Vournas, noticed the engine sputtering and losing power, identified that the flight could not reach its destination, and searched for a landing spot. The aircraft touched down smoothly with bumps from the watermelons. The pilot and two passengers, including a child, escaped without reported injuries. Authorities did not immediately report a cause, and an investigation is ongoing.
