Pittsburg councilmembers to get a pay bump for first time in 30 years
"PITTSBURG - For the first time in 30 years, councilmembers in Pittsburg will receive a salary increase - but it won't take effect until late 2026."
"The recommended amount recognizes that while Pittsburg, by law, may compensate up to $1,900 per month, its population is in the lower end of the population range," said Venenciano."
"And that is the case here in Pittsburg, since the city does make available and pay for these benefits," said Venenciano."
Pittsburg will increase City Council compensation from $500 per month, set in 1995, to $1,600 per month, effective Dec. 6, 2026, after the next general election. The prior $500 rate was determined based on an estimated 1995 population between 50,000 and 75,000. Senate Bill 329 (2023) permits general law city councils to adjust stipends for inflation, allowing up to $1,900 monthly for cities with populations between 75,000 and 150,000. Among 16 general law cities in Contra Costa County, Pittsburg has the third-highest population but the third-lowest council compensation. Pittsburg provides retirement, health, welfare, and federal Social Security benefits for councilmembers.
