"Liu, who walked away from the sport four years ago, made an amazing comeback that concluded with a gold medal. In fact, she was the first American woman to win an individual Olympic medal in the sport since Sasha Cohen in 2006."
"The Illuminaries, an urban street art group responsible for many murals throughout Oakland and the Bay Area, depict Liu with her gold medal in a mural at the corner of 43rd Street and Telegraph Avenue. Illuminaries' artists Steve Ha, Tim Hon and Eric Nodora worked on the mural in the Temescal district over several days as residents watched the progression."
"Oakland has honored its Olympic hero through multiple tributes. Fenton's Creamery has offered the gold medalist free ice cream for life. And she received a celebratory message after an Italian dinner at a restaurant in Alameda."
Alysa Liu, an Oakland native, won a gold medal in figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, becoming the first American woman to win an individual Olympic medal in the sport since Sasha Cohen in 2006. Liu had walked away from competitive figure skating four years prior before making her remarkable comeback. In recognition of her achievement, Oakland has celebrated Liu through multiple tributes. The Illuminaries, an urban street art group known for murals throughout Oakland and the Bay Area, created a mural depicting Liu with her gold medal at the corner of 43rd Street and Telegraph Avenue in the Temescal district. Artists Steve Ha, Tim Hon, and Eric Nodora worked on the mural over several days, with the Oakland Roots sponsoring the project. The mural replaced a previous one of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson. Additional honors include a lifetime free ice cream offer from Fenton's Creamery and a celebratory dinner message from an Alameda restaurant.
