Palo Alto orders demolition of former Stanford Terrace Inn - San Jose Spotlight
""We would not want to send firefighters into the building in the event of a fire," Jasso said."
""This was a conversion of one use to another, and there were no permits that were pulled to activate or implement any of those changes," Planning Director Jonathan Lait said."
"Evidence of trespassers staying on the property, such as blankets and fecal matter, compounds the fire hazard because people living in the dilapidated building would be likely to start small fires to keep warm and cook food."
The Palo Alto City Council approved a demolition order for the Stanford Terrace Inn, citing severe safety hazards including insufficient fire sprinklers and hazardous materials. Fire Marshal Tamara Jasso reported that the building's condition posed risks to neighbors and first responders. The property, previously a hotel, was converted to residential use without proper permits. Despite being vacant, evidence of trespassers was found, exacerbating fire hazards. The property owner has submitted two housing project applications since 2024, both of which were unsuccessful.
