One year into an uneven recovery, L.A.'s fire survivors mark a somber milestone
""Because I don't know if I've made a financial decision that's gonna ruin us, or are we just going to be optimistic and hope that it will work out?""
""It's going to be uneven, that's the thing,""
""Some folks are very far along, some are within months of moving back in. And some haven't even figured out what their insurance might cover,""
Wind-driven wildfires swept into Pacific Palisades and Altadena, killing 31 people and destroying more than 16,000 structures. Kelly and Andrew King lost their Altadena home in the Eaton Fire and began rebuilding despite insurance uncertainty, having poured concrete for a new garage. Many neighbors cannot afford to rebuild or have listed lots for sale. About two-thirds of lots remain empty one year later. Recovery progress is uneven across blocks, with some residents close to moving back and others still determining insurance coverage. Los Angeles faces similar recovery challenges as Paradise, Boulder County, and Lahaina.
