The ninth annual Black Joy Parade takes place in downtown Oakland at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, the last Sunday of Black History Month. More than 30,000 attendees are expected, with 111 contingents and 4,500 participants in the parade. The following festival runs until 7 p.m. and features over 200 booths highlighting Black-owned businesses, nonprofits, and artists; children’s activities; a dance competition; and two stages of live performances. Actor, dancer and R&B singer Mya headlines the free event. The theme for the year is 'Black Is the Blueprint,' emphasizing Black creativity, innovation, style, language and rhythm.
