Oakland recorded 67 homicides in 2025, a 22% decrease from 86 the previous year; 57 were classified as murder, down from 78. The city's violent crime rate fell 25%. The Ceasefire strategy focuses on a small number of people identified as at-risk of being shot or shooting someone within the next 90 days, offering services and life coaching to interrupt cycles of violence. In the first four days of 2026 five people were fatally shot in three separate incidents, two of which are near-resolved.
