As Oakland confronted a $130 million budget deficit in December 2024, the City Council temporarily closed two fire stations and allowed a third, closed for repairs since 2022, to remain out of service. The closures occurred in January 2025 amid major California wildfires and after the Keller Fire threatened the Oakland Hills, prompting strong public and firefighter concern. The City Council identified funding to reopen the stations in March and finalized a budget in June that preserved emergency services. Stations 25 and 28 in the Oakland Hills and Station 10 in Grand Lake have reopened, returning all 25 Oakland stations to operation and boosting safety and morale.
