Nonprofit that hires homeless to close next month
"The current political and financial environment has significantly impacted the organization's ability to continue sustainable programs,"
"We are deeply proud of the impact we have made over the last 20 years,"
Downtown Streets Team will end operations at the end of October because of the current political and financial environment. The nonprofit was founded in Palo Alto in 2005 and expanded to 16 cities from Salinas to Sacramento. The program helped 2,211 people obtain housing and 2,103 people secure jobs lasting more than 90 days while removing 33.1 million gallons of debris from city streets. Contracts existed with Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, San Jose and Redwood City. Palo Alto is developing transition plans for downtown cleaning, homeless outreach services and the food closet. A 2023 business-model change followed a San Francisco investigation, a settlement for $800,000, and the end of a $50 weekly stipend, which reduced participation.
