A nine-year-old girl was bitten by a sea lion while participating in a surf lesson at Asilomar State Beach. The incident occurred as the girl was one of five students in the ocean. She suffered puncture wounds but is recovering well. The surf instructor, Alex De Marignac, reacted quickly to get the children to safety. Typically, sea lions leave Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco during this time for mating seasons, which may explain the unexpected presence in the area. Sea lion bites are rare but can occur.
Corale Olsen described the moment of the attack, stating, 'It was right next to me, and I was like Oh my gosh, something really bad is going to happen.' Then it just bit me, the nine-year-old sea lion-bit victim.
Surf instructor Alex De Marignac expressed his surprise at the incident, saying, 'I feel like most kids kind of like go after sea lions lightly, and nothing happens. This time something did happen.'
