Newsom to impose 100% tax on California payees of Trump's $1.8bn fund
A $1.776bn federal fund was created to compensate alleged victims of lawfare and weaponization. The fund stems from a settlement between Donald Trump and the IRS after Trump sued over leaked tax returns. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a plan to impose a 100% tax on any payout received by state residents, arguing the program could divert money to Trump allies. The fund will be overseen by five officials appointed by the US attorney general and will be funded from a source typically used for court judgments. Quarterly reports will track recipients and amounts. Claims end on 1 December 2028, and remaining funds return to the federal government.
"Quarterly reports on who has received monetary relief and in what amount will be sent to the attorney general. Claims will not be processed after 1 December 2028, at which point any remaining amount will be returned to the federal government, according to the DoJ. The DoJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how it would address Newsom's proposed tax."
