The Pickett Fire ignited Thursday afternoon at 2343 Pickett Road near Calistoga and expanded to 3,235 acres with 7% containment by Friday afternoon. Crews worked overnight on the south side and faced rocky terrain when accessing the west side. Fire behavior was aggressive at ignition but became more manageable on Friday, with crews holding the south flank and aircraft targeting north and east advances. The fire is slope- and fuels-driven rather than wind-driven, unlike the Glass Fire. Some evacuation orders remain and are posted on the Napa County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. An air quality advisory and a heat advisory are in effect.
The Pickett Fire ignited Thursday afternoon at 2343 Pickett Road on the edge of Calistoga. The blaze has grown to 3,235 acres as of Friday afternoon, according to Cal Fire, with 7% containment. No injuries have been reported. Some evacuation orders are still in place, and the latest information can be found on the Napa County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
Crews worked through the south side of the fire all night, Jeremy Pierce, the operation chief for Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, said in a morning news conference. Crews had difficulties accessing the west side of the fire because of rocky terrain. Although the fire was "very aggressive" when it started Thursday, Pierce said it's more manageable on Friday. "Today, the fire is a much different fire," he said.
Pierce said the Pickett Fire is "not anywhere close to the conditions as the Glass Fire" because that blaze was wind-driven, while the Pickett Fire is "slope and fuels driven" and not exacerbated by extreme weather. He said crews have held the fire on its south side, or the area closest to Calistoga, and that aircraft are working to stop the blaze from advancing to the north and east.
