Mayor Barbara Lee made significant appointments to the Port of Oakland board, crucial for the region's economic development. Reappointed was Barbara Leslie, while Alvina Wong and Derrick Muhammad were appointed anew. Wong, an environmental advocate, aims to bolster public health commitments and support clean port initiatives. Muhammad, a longshoreman from a notable family, brings deep local roots and maritime expertise. These changes reflect a commitment to community voices and sustainable development, with all appointments pending city council approval.
Wong will finish out the term of Yui Hay Lee, while Muhammad will replace Michael Colbruno, the board's current president and member for 12 years.
Wong's appointment would answer some officials' and community members' recent calls for an environmentalist on the port board.
I'm most excited to support the port's efforts to increase public health commitments, realize its zero emission goals, implement the clean ports plan, and explore ways to utilize environmental protection initiatives as economic and workforce development drivers.
Muhammad described himself as a lifelong Oaklander and a third-generation longshoreman.
