Matt Mahan jumped into the governor's race and the money came pouring in
"A week after San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan made a late entry into the governor's race at the end of last month, he announced on social media that his campaign might be making history for how quickly it had gathered more than $7 million in political donations, vaulting him past most of his Democratic rivals in fundraising for the wide-open race."
"Politico soon reported that tech heavyweights, including Y Combinator executive Michael Seibel and Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill, had given at least $3.3 million to a newly formed independent committee supporting Mahan's bid. Unlike candidate campaigns, political action committees, or PACs, can raise unlimited amounts to promote or oppose candidates or measures. They are reliably major spenders in statewide elections and can swing voter support."
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan entered the governor's race late and rapidly amassed more than $7 million in political donations. Early support has come largely from Silicon Valley tech leaders and a newly formed independent committee that reported at least $3.3 million in contributions. Independent committees and PACs can accept unlimited donations and often play decisive roles in statewide races. The campaign has not yet filed its donor reports but plans to submit them later in the week. Mahan has prior ties to tech as a former executive with past funding from Sean Parker and Marc Benioff.
