John Beam, 66, a beloved Bay Area football coach and longtime Laney College athletic director, was shot at Laney College in Oakland and later pronounced dead at Highland Hospital. Campus security increased with guards posted on corners and police tape sealing the sports complex where the shooting occurred. A small vigil with candles, flowers and a handwritten sign honored Beam. Peralta Community College District Chancellor Tammeil Gilkerson described profound sorrow while praising his vibrancy, passion for students, and influence. Beam stepped down as head coach in 2024 and had served as athletic director since 2006.
