Map: Multiple California wildfires rage, with thousands of acres scorched amid evacuation orders, minimal containment
Active wildfires burning across California have consumed more than 22,000 acres as firefighters respond to dangerous conditions. At least six major blazes stretch from Santa Barbara County to San Diego County, with the Santa Rosa Island Fire in Santa Barbara County consuming nearly 17,000 acres. Several other fires remain minimally contained, and evacuation orders have forced residents from homes in some areas. California wildfire seasons are driven by dry vegetation, high winds, and prolonged drought. The current outbreaks follow deadly January 2025 fires in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, which destroyed homes, displaced thousands, and caused multiple deaths. The Santa Rosa Island Fire, ignited May 15, has burned 16,942 acres and is 26% contained, with no evacuation orders or warnings. The River Fire began May 18, burned 3,535 acres, and is 70% contained, with no evacuation orders or warnings. The Sandy Fire began May 18, burned 1,698 acres, and is 15% contained, with mandatory evacuations in multiple zones and warnings for nearby communities.
"The Sandy Fire erupted May 18 and has burned 1,698 acres while remaining just 15% contained as of Wednesday morning. Officials said a major firefighting operation is underway with roughly 900 personnel deployed to battle the blaze. Heavy aircraft support is also assisting crews on the ground. Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for multiple zones, including Bell Canyon, Burr and portions of Simi Valley."
