In a serious incident, a man was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers after he was observed throwing rocks at oncoming vehicles in San Jacinto. The event unfolded on February 17 around 5 p.m. when officers responded to reports of the rock-throwing near Gilman Springs Road. Despite efforts to subdue him with non-lethal options, the situation escalated, leading to the police shooting. Though one vehicle incurred damage, the suspect did not have a firearm, and the shooting is under investigation by local authorities.
At around 5 p.m., officers from the CHP San Gorgonio Pass area responded to reports of a man throwing rocks at vehicles near Gilman Springs Road.
Torres could not provide details about the size of the rocks the suspect threw, but said at least one car had significant damage from a rock.
CHP officers ordered the suspect to stop and attempted to stop him using non-deadly force options.
Cal Fire/Riverside personnel declared the man dead at the scene. The suspect, whose name was not released, did not have a firearm at the time of the shooting.
