"A 36-year-old man carrying a broken shovel charged at an Anaheim police officer before the officer fatally shot him outside an elementary school last month, body-worn camera footage shows. Police first received a call around 12:10 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, about a suspicious man standing outside a home in the 1100 block of North Columbine Street and holding a brick, Sgt. Jacob Gallacher said in a video posted on the Anaheim Police Department's YouTube page."
"Minutes later, an officer arrived at Falmouth Street and Holly Avenue and encountered the man, later identified as Rudy Anthony Martinez II of Norwalk, walking in the middle of the road outside the school. Dash camera footage shows Rudy Anthony Martinez II, 36, raising a shovel to strike the patrol car. The text reflects the officer's commands to the suspect, added as captions by the Anaheim Police Department."
Police received a call around 12:10 p.m. on Sept. 15 about a suspicious man outside a home holding a brick. Thirty minutes later dispatch received a second call from John Marshall Elementary reporting the same man near campus with a broken shovel. The school employee said he had lingered near the school, pacing while clutching the broken wooden handle. An officer encountered the man walking in the middle of the road outside the school. Dash and body-worn camera footage show the man raising and striking a patrol car with the shovel, then charging at the officer, who fatally shot him. The man was identified as Rudy Anthony Martinez II, 36.
