Man, 36, drowns in Donner Lake over Memorial Day weekend
A report came in Sunday shortly after 4:30 p.m. about a man missing while swimming in Donner Lake. First responders learned Juan Carlos Garcia-Guitierrez, 36, had been using a pontoon boat and jumped into the water without a personal floatation device. Windy conditions caused the boat to drift away, and he began struggling before disappearing below the surface. Multiple local agencies searched the lake as darkness approached and winds remained strong. Truckee police planned to call off the search, but winds later calmed. Around 9:30 p.m., an underwater remotely operated vehicle located his body about 100 feet deep. The body was recovered and transported to the Nevada County coroner, and the boat launch reopened after the closure during the operation.

When first responders arrived at Donner Lake, they learned Juan Carlos Garcia-Guitierrez, 36, had been using a pontoon boat on the lake. He jumped off the pontoon boat to swim but was not wearing a personal floatation device."
"When the windy conditions caused the boat to drift out of his reach, Garcia-Guitierrez began struggling in the water, eventually disappearing below the surface. Searchers from multiple local agencies responded to the lake to locate Garcia-Guitierrez. With darkness falling and the winds still strong, Truckee police planned to call off the search."
"After dusk, however, winds calmed, and around 9:30 p.m., an underwater remotely operated vehicle used by Truckee police located Garcia-Guitierrez's body about 100 feet deep.
