"On Monday afternoon, heavy rain caused a 40-foot section of Highway 116's eastbound lane to erode between Duncan Road and Monte Cristo Avenue, just west of Monte Rio, Caltrans said. A photo posted by the agency shows a section of the highway badly damaged, including a guardrail hanging off the cliff and erosion under the road. Another photo, taken at Duncan Road just west of Monte Rio, shows a tree toppled over and blocking part of the lane."
"The agency hopes to complete as much work as possible before summer, which is the region's busy season, but Weiss said it will probably be difficult because of the terrain. "There's very limited space between the hillside and the Russian River, so there's very little room available for large machinery and big work crews," he said. "Also, there are trees on either side, further reducing the work area.""
Intense winter storms and heavy rain eroded a 40-foot section of Highway 116's eastbound lane between Duncan Road and Monte Cristo Avenue near Monte Rio, damaging the guardrail and undermining the roadway. Caltrans reduced the route to one-way traffic after landslides and toppled trees were observed. Crews plan a temporary retaining wall to stabilize the slope before constructing a permanent wall as part of a longer-term project. Repair timing is uncertain and likely prolonged due to constrained space between the hillside and the Russian River, limited room for heavy equipment, and dense trees. The highway links inland areas to the coast and serves several tourist communities.
