Tribes that own casinos have long sought to bar competing cardrooms from offering Las Vegas-style gambling and spent millions pursuing that goal. Last year the California Legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom approved a measure granting tribes one opportunity this year to sue cardrooms in Sacramento County Superior Court, after tribal sovereignty previously deprived them of standing. Superior Court Judge Lauri Damrell dismissed the tribes' case, holding that federal gambling law supersedes the state measure. The judge noted prior efforts have been unavailing but said she was bound by federal law. Cardrooms welcomed the ruling and emphasized continued support for jobs and local services.
