Judge sets $8 million bail for one suspect of San Ramon jewelry store heist
""He is innocent," said Ray's girlfriend coming out of court."
""not guilty... was not at the incident at all.""
""Everyone of course is innocent until proven - until the charges are proven. The DA has that burden. We would not have filed the case if we didn't have sufficient evidence to prove these charges beyond a reasonable doubt," said Diana Becton, Contra Costa County District Attorney."
""So far from the investigation that the police have reported, that the vehicles they arrived in and the vehicles they used to get away were alleged to be stolen cars, and we know that the amount of jewelry taken is $1.7 million," said Becton."
A 27-year-old man, Jimmy Mack Ray, appeared in court facing 13 counts of second-degree robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit a crime, with robbery enhancements that could add years to a sentence. Police reported finding jewelry in his possession and connected him to the Heller Jewelers robbery in San Ramon that involved about $1.7 million in stolen items. Investigators allege the vehicles used to arrive and flee were stolen. Video captured roughly 20 people committing the crime, but only four suspects—three adults and one juvenile—are being prosecuted. Ray was found in a vehicle stopped after the crime. Defense representatives and a girlfriend asserted his innocence while the district attorney affirmed that prosecutors believe they have sufficient evidence.
