"It's sickening,"
"Those people, they're deceased and resting in peace, and you got these idiots doing these things."
More than a dozen headstones were taken and damaged at Woodlawn Celestial Gardens in Compton, a historic cemetery that contains about 26,000 burials, including veterans and several Civil War Union soldiers. Owner Celestinia Bishop discovered the losses Thursday and believes thieves broke in the night before to remove bronze and copper plaques; replacing the markers can cost up to nearly $4,000 each. Volunteer maintenance worker Marvis Jackson found a hole in a chain-link fence and reported the thefts as sickening. Neighbor Michael Bravo noted youths have been seen entering nearby alleys and other cemeteries. Prominent people buried there include city founder Griffith Dickenson Compton, Francis Townsend, and Alprentice "Bunchy" Carter.
