A live-fire artillery round at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton triggered periodic closures along a 17-mile stretch of Interstate 5, with the northern closure just outside San Clemente city limits. Mid-morning southbound traffic halted about half a mile before the El Camino Real exit after preceding exits displayed flashing warnings. Motorists who continued beyond Avenida Palizada faced at least 30-minute delays, and some drivers made illegal near-90-degree turns to exit via a vacant onramp until a California Highway Patrol officer shut access. Local officials reported no coordination with military authorities, labeled the event a show of force, and warned the closure imposed needless financial strain.
