""It was very much a slow and steady pace.""
An avalanche struck the Castle Peak area in Nevada County near Donner Summit around 11:30 am, impacting a 15-person backcountry ski group of four guides and 11 clients. Nine people died and one remained missing; six survived, including one guide and five clients, who sheltered under a tarp. The survivors used an iPhone SOS feature to contact rescuers. The group had spent two nights at Frog Lake and was hiking back to a trailhead when overwhelmed.
