Gang-scarred Stockton fed up after mass killing at child's birthday party: 'No one will forget'
""We have gang shootings and homicides in our city, but this hits differently," said Stockton Councilmember Michele Padilla. "This is something no one will forget.""
""She deserved a childhood full of laughter, school days, karate, family time and deams...not this," read the page."
""Amari was a football player, a basketball player, a brother, son, and cousin," the page read. "He was making plans and looking into colleges.""
""Our investigation team is going down all paths," Heather Brent, spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department, said. "By releasing misinformation or assumptions, that can hinder our investigation.""
Stockton experienced a brazen shooting at a toddler's birthday party that left four people dead, including three children aged 8, 9 and 14, and wounded 11 others. The 8-year-old victim was identified as Maya Lupian and the 14-year-old as Amari Peterson. Family fundraising pages described Maya as deserving a childhood of laughter, school days, karate and family time and described Amari as a bright, promising student and athlete planning for college. Investigators have not made arrests and are examining possible motives, including potential gang links and the attendance of local rappers. Two people associated with the rappers were taken into custody, and authorities warned that misinformation could hinder the investigation. City leaders and the community expressed deep shock and grief.
