Fremont begins clearing park as homeless campers head for hotels
"My whole life is now in two boxes, Rivera, 30, said later Monday."
"I lost a lot of stuff that I couldn't take with me."
Michelle Rivera woke at about 6 a.m. as Fremont city workers began a multi-phased cleanup of Isherwood Park, taking toiletries, clothes and dog bowls while throwing a tent, bed, cooking supplies and other items into a dumpster. Workers tore down tents and cleared park sections in a $40,000 effort to restore the Old Alameda Creek watershed and remove contamination, debris and vegetation. The city provided each camper two plastic bins, has asked all campers to leave by Nov. 14 for fencing, began outreach in May, and plans to use about $680,000 in winter relief funds for temporary shelter, hotel vouchers, a Homeless Navigation Center and related services including meals, pet food and social-worker visits.
