I think the most important thing is to make sure that everyone's evacuated safely, that there's no deaths and whoever was affected, that they're okay." Five building residents were treated at the scene for injuries, and three of them were taken to an area hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, as KTVU reports. One firefighter also suffered a minor injury."
A three-alarm fire broke out Monday morning at a five-story, 43-unit building at 19th and Broadway in downtown Oakland, beginning around 7:15 am. The blaze was confined to a rear portion of the building on the 19th Street side above Gai Noi, a Thai restaurant, with the ground floor housing Dope Era, a clothing store owned by Mistah F.A.B. Thick black smoke poured down hallways as the fire appears to have started on the second floor and spread to the floors above. Six people were injured, five residents treated at the scene, three hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and one firefighter suffered a minor injury. The fire was brought under control by 8:40 am and the cause is under investigation.
