""Ear Hustle," the first podcast made inside prison, helped co-creator Earlonne Woods get released early and sparked a movement of prison podcasts."
""The idea was to tell everyday stories of life inside that didn't talk about violence, didn't talk about how people got to prison, didn't necessarily talk about the system, how we felt about it, but what happens when you need to make a life in prison," Poor said."
""We love 'Ear Hustle!'""
Ear Hustle is the first podcast produced inside a prison and helped co-creator Earlonne Woods gain early release and later a pardon. The podcast began at San Quentin's media center in 2017 after Woods and visual arts teacher Nigel Poor met. The creators pair public live shows with in-prison recordings and teaching visits, including California Institution for Women in Chino. The podcast focuses on everyday life inside prison rather than violence or the justice system. Ear Hustle has roughly 88 million downloads, inspired dozens of prison-based podcasts internationally, and spawned listening and discussion clubs inside prisons.
