Tolls on seven state-owned Bay Area bridges increase by $0.50 starting Jan. 1, raising car tolls from $8 to $8.50. The increase will continue with $0.50 increments over the next four years before stabilizing. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission oversees the bridges and reports the last toll increase directed to repairs was in 2010. A $2.3 billion capital improvement plan targets deck improvements, step repairs, and cable strengthening.
