"In a news release issued on Dec. 31, DMV officials said about 1.5% of California Real IDs will need to be reissued. The DMV noted that Real IDs with the wrong expiration dates were given to "immigrants with lawful presence." For this group, the Real ID expiration date should line up with the end of the individual's authorized stay, not the standard renewal interval."
"which focused on setting "minimum security standards" for IDs in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. After a two-decade delay, the Department of Homeland Security finally started enforcing Real ID standards in May 2025, requiring travelers on domestic flights to have Real ID-compliant forms of identification in order to board. The IDs were also required for entrance to some federal facilities."
About 325,000 California residents will need new Real IDs because approximately 1.5% of Real IDs were issued with incorrect expiration dates. The incorrect dates affected immigrants with lawful presence whose Real ID expirations should match the end of authorized stay rather than standard renewal intervals. The error stems from a software configuration dating to 2006 under the Schwarzenegger administration. Enforcement of Real ID standards began in May 2025, requiring Real ID-compliant identification for domestic flights and some federal facilities. Impacted residents will receive notifications, will not be charged fees for replacements, and nearly 99% of Real ID holders are unaffected.
