For best safety measures, officials recommend wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, avoiding drinking alcohol while swimming, and keeping an eye on children at all times."
A man separated from his friends while swimming in the Kings River on Sept. 20 and was later recovered deceased; his identity remains unreleased. Fresno County reported three drownings in the Kings River in 2025, up from one in 2024. Several people have died while trying to escape Northern California heat, including a 37-year-old who drowned in the river in August and a 35-year-old who died kayaking in Courtright Reservoir without a life jacket in July. Three bodies were recovered from the San Joaquin and American rivers in July. Officials warn that water currents, debris, and mud can endanger swimmers and recommend U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, avoiding alcohol, and constant supervision of children.
