Crews battle large fire at Public Storage facility in Richmond
"It is common to have a difficult time to get in the last bit of the fire because we just have so much building material that has collapsed on top of the flame that is on the first floor,"
"The wind definitely contributed to the spread of the fire throughout the building. It just made firefighting operations extremely difficult for our crews,"
"Especially our truck companies, on the roofs, trying to get ahead of the fire. And encountering strong winds and rain. And low visibility. It just made an already challenging operation that much more difficult."
"I don't know what's going to happen now,"
A fire broke out just after midnight at a Public Storage facility on Carlson Boulevard during a major storm. Fire crews achieved full containment the next morning but continued working to extinguish deep-seated hot spots due to collapsed building material. The second floor collapsed onto the first floor, causing significant damage to multiple units. Strong winds and rain contributed to rapid fire spread and made rooftop firefighting and visibility extremely difficult for crews. A renter reported his unit collapsed but said his contents were insured. An on-site manager lived at the facility with her children.
