"You know, any type of theft that's going on in your community is absolutely terrible. And then, when it happens to a school, and affects learning and education, it just makes it even worse,"
"What's unfortunate is that this has been going on forever,"
"The goal here at the end of the day is to sort of sort devalue and debunk the idea that you're going to be able to cash-in by stealing copper wire,"
"Thirty-eight thousand square feet of copper wire has been stolen on the street value of that, is $11,000, what it costs"
Stolen copper wire at Luigi Aprea Elementary School left almost half of the classrooms without power at the start of the day. This is the second incident in less than a month after a similar theft at Rod Kelly Elementary School. Both incidents have been reported to the Gilroy Police Department. Mayor Greg Bozzo described thefts that affect schools as especially harmful to learning and education. California has seen a surge in copper wire thefts, prompting a bill by Assemblymember Mark González to impose stricter penalties and require junk dealers to document seller and metal identification details.
