Commentary: A Becerra-Steyer race in November? It's possible
Tom Steyer trails Steve Hilton but could still move up as polls place him unexpectedly in third, possibly second, with only days left to campaign. Chad Bianco, the MAGA sheriff and Republican contender, is almost certainly finished, preventing a Republican sweep in California. With Bianco out, the primary could produce two Democrats on the November ticket, turning a previously dry race into a surprise-outcome possibility. A Becerra–Steve Hilton top-two would effectively elect Becerra because insufficient Republican voters exist to win a general election. A Becerra–Steyer face-off would require both Democrats to articulate distinct visions beyond generic liberal ideas, while voters decide largely through in-person voting and remaining ballots. The state’s pressing issues include a failing healthcare system and gas prices that even lawmakers find puzzling.
"With just days left to campaign and polls putting him in an unexpectedly strong third place - maybe even second - Tom Steyer is down-not-out. But Riverside's favorite MAGA sheriff and Republican contender Chad Bianco is almost definitely shoulders-to-the-mat done."
