City of Oakland: 'Daylighting' enforcement will have to wait
""So it's gonna be a longer effort," Maher said. "It's gonna involve bringing on the resources to actually paint all these curbs, and it will roll out as those curbs get painted. It's probably a multiple-year project.""
""I think in the immediate term, it is just about how we use what we have since we don't have the resources right now," Maher said."
The California daylighting law AB 413 prohibits parking, standing, or stopping within 20 feet of intersections with crosswalks and within 15 feet of intersections with curb extensions. The law became effective in 2024 with jurisdictions allowed to issue warnings, and jurisdictions may issue citations starting this year. Oakland has not implemented citation enforcement because the Department of Transportation has only two staff responsible for all curb painting across the city's 80 square miles. Implementation requires painting curbs and sometimes removing parking meters; rollout will be incremental as intersections are redone and funding is sought for additional painters.
