Caltrans is enhancing safety and operational efficiency at Regent's Slide by incorporating remote-controlled machinery, allowing for increased risk management during repair operations. Following a significant slide event on March 9, 2024, traditional excavation methods have been supplemented with this modern technology, which operators began training on in March. The initiative, developed in collaboration with Caterpillar Inc., aims to mitigate risks associated with the steep and unstable terrain while continuing geologic assessments to ensure excavation work remains safe for workers.
Working closely with Caterpillar Inc. and other contracting partners, the incorporation of this technology is intended to increase production and protect worker safety at Regent's Slide.
The slide continues to move daily, as we may need to back off from excavation if the measurements indicate acceleration is too rapid.
