Caltrans finishes $33M project on crash-plagued corridor along Highway 49
"Caltrans said the upgrades include a new concrete safety barrier and roundabouts along the stretch between Lorenson Road and Florence Lane and Lone Star Road in Placer County, where cars have crossed into oncoming traffic. The concrete barrier was added in the middle of the road, stretching for 1.3 miles, to help prevent cross-centerline crashes along the corridor, Caltrans said."
"According to a study from Caltrans, the corridor, which runs through rural Sierra Nevada foothill communities north of Auburn, had a history of cross-median crashes. During a three-year period from January 2015 to December 2017, Caltrans reported 34 collisions. The department also installed two new roundabouts along the corridor, at the Lorenson Road intersection and at the Lone Star Road intersection. Crews installed several other new safety improvements at the intersections such as new pavement, striping, curb and gutters, sidewalks, lighting and signs."
Caltrans completed a $33.2 million safety upgrade on State Route 49 in Placer County, adding a 1.3-mile concrete median barrier and two roundabouts at Lorenson Road and Lone Star Road. The corridor experienced 34 cross-median collisions from January 2015 through December 2017. Additional intersection improvements include new pavement, striping, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, lighting and signs. The project was approved in August 2021, began construction in April 2024, and finished ahead of an earlier $38 million estimate. Caltrans plans further Highway 49 work, including a roundabout in Auburn and shoulder widening to improve wildfire evacuation.
