Caltrans will temporarily close a notorious 20-mile stretch of highway Tuesday through Thursday next week to finish a multiyear interchange repair project. Work includes completing the full-width connection of the new interchange to existing State Route 41, plus paving and striping. The closure runs from the Highway 41/46 interchange near Cholame east to Reef Station near State Route 33. Detours and delays are expected but should not exceed 45 minutes. The work was delayed by the Gifford Fire, which burned more than 130,000 acres and disrupted Highway 166, preventing simultaneous closures. The route has a history of deadly crashes, including James Dean's 1955 fatality.
