California's farmworker population has grown older over recent decades, with the average age rising from about 30 in 1979 to roughly 40 today and many workers continuing into their 60s and 70s. A major migration wave beginning in the 1970s brought hundreds of thousands of young people from Mexico to fill agricultural jobs, shifting workforce demographics from predominantly 16–25-year-olds in 1969 to 25–34-year-olds by the 1990s. Parental chronic health problems and financial strain have led many parents to urge children to pursue education rather than field work, and many children follow that advice. John Burton died at 92 after years of declining health. He and his brother created the "Burton machine" that dominated San Francisco and California politics for decades. Burton was known for a blunt, plain-spoken style and for fighting for labor unions and the working class.
