California surfer escapes shark attack that shreds his board and wet suit, drives to the hospital
"My board snapped in half on impact. My friend watching said that I flew in the air,"
"I'm still piecing together what happened. ...The whole thing was so jarring, I was just trying to get away."
"I just remember Tommy saying, 'I'll meet you out there,' and suiting up. I was looking out at the waves when I saw the thrashing," Guerrero said. "I said, 'Oh that's a shark attack,' thinking it was attacking a seal. I didn't realize it was Tommy."
"I didn't know where the shark was, so I just focused on getting away. After a minute, I realized that if the shark [had] wanted to bite me again, it would've,"
Tommy Civik, 26, entered the water near Gualala around 8:30 a.m. and about ten minutes later was struck from below by a force he identified as a shark. The impact snapped his surfboard in half and sent him airborne; a friend witnessed the shark's tail whipping above the water. Civik never saw the animal but focused on swimming away and reached shore with only the tail of his board remaining. The friend initially thought the thrashing was a seal attack and did not realize Civik was involved. The incident occurred less than a month after a fatal shark attack in Monterey Bay.
