California scout troop rescues 78-year-old lost in Sierra Nevada
"We started very quickly realizing that he wasn't all right,"
"He was looking really bedraggled. He's got cuts all over his hands. He's very unsteady on his feet, and he's being polite, but he's pretty out of it."
"I pulled him down and got some food into him, got electrolytes into him and started getting him to heat up,"
Nine scouts and their scoutmaster found a disoriented 78-year-old man, Douglas Montgomery, standing in a meadow in the Emigrant Wilderness. Montgomery had veered about 15 miles off his intended route and lost his backpack, which contained food, water, camping gear and a GPS-enabled communication device. He spent two days battling hypothermia, sheltering under loam and foliage and drinking from puddles. The scouts, averaging 12 years old and four days into a seven-day trip, provided aid. Scoutmaster Michael-James Hey gave food and electrolytes and worked to warm him. California Highway Patrol confirmed his identity.
