A 64-year-old man, Richard David Lavalle, was convicted of second-degree murder for a Dec. 6, 2020 collision that killed 12-year-old Noel Bascon and sentenced to 30 years to life. Lavalle ignored a stop sign while driving a U-Haul pickup eastbound on Arlington, struck the boy in a marked crosswalk, and a blood test found methamphetamine in his system. Lavalle's sentence was increased due to prior convictions including a 2009 federal bank robbery and a 2018 robbery, and a prior DUI warning. The boy was thrown from his bike, died at a hospital, and the family described deep, lasting grief; Lavalle expressed remorse and has documented PTSD and veteran status.
