California DMV advises some people to hold off getting Real ID
Briefly

With the impending May 7 deadline for new identification rules at U.S. airports, the California DMV advises that individuals with valid U.S. passports can postpone applying for a Real ID until their driver's license renewal. DMV offices are experiencing long wait times, prompting extended hours at select locations. These are aimed specifically at Real ID applications, and appointments are required. Applicants are encouraged to initiate the process online, with an in-office visit expected to take about 15 minutes.
"If you already have a current U.S. passport or don't need to fly within the U.S. in the next few months, you can wait to get your Real ID until you renew your California driver's license or ID," DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a press release.
The extended hours, whether on Saturday or on weekday mornings, are designated for Real ID applications only and they require an appointment.
